Tenerife North Airport

A habitable hill that enhances the incoming natural daylight, the warmth and the interior translucence projected to its surroundings

The Tenerife North airport blends with its environment with its rounded forms, as if it were a built-on hill that is related to the sinuous silhouette of the surrounding mountains. The interior spaces offer the traveller a bright and warm place, where their visit is pleasant enabling them to enjoy the magnificent views of the landscape, both air and land, the suggestive perspectives of interior spaces interconnected and bathed in light enhance the functioning of the building becoming apparent from any point of observation. The use of materials such as light coloured stone for the paving and the facade facing; the wall covering and suspended ceiling panels of birch wood with the same light tone; and the beams sheathed with laminated wood, all come together to reinforce the warmth and brightness of the interior spaces. These materials all contrast with the strength of exposed concrete which award the building its magnificence. The large dimensions of the spaces do not detract from the comfort of the stay in them. Its scale and quality of space creates a personalized offer where the passenger’s treatment is concerned. The installations can take up to four millions passengers a year without having to change its physiognomy. The composition of the building is organized around a very representative central area, with great visual communication with dome lighting which connects all the levels. The wooden ceiling turns out to be the emblem of the building making it a very identifiable airport in people’s memory. The second space of the building, in terms of magnitude, is the baggage claim hall that, with its ceiling of staggered wooden slats, becomes a space with richness and quality lighting. Finally the body of connections to the runway is completed by a great wooden overhang that crowns the two other spaces and connects them with big hollows allowing interesting crossover views.

On the west wing of the existing space under the general departure lounge there were company offices and a VIP lounge set up on the second level using the general compositional criteria of the terminal, and with quality furnishings providing magnificent views of the surroundings and the platform and runway.

Making the most of the central area situated underneath the airport departure lounge, a specific departure lounge for regional flights was located, providing four new gates with passenger access on foot or by shuttle buses to the aircraft that make the inter-insular flights without the passengers having to change levels.
