RESTORATION OF A PROTECTED HOUSE IN GARACHICO
Transforming a Ruin into a Small Oasis
This small house located in the historic centre of Garachico, protected under the Special Preservation Plan of the historic district, was found in an advanced state of ruin.
With a surface area of only 44 m², the house consists of a single interior space and an adjoining courtyard enclosed by dry-stone walls.
The intervention involved reconstructing the hipped roof and replacing most of the walls damaged by years of water infiltration, while preserving the essential character of the original building.
Respecting the austerity of a house built with very limited means, the rehabilitation uses only simple materials such as fir timber, concrete and lime plaster.
Recovered roof tiles, together with the original window and door, remain the most visible historical elements, carefully restored to preserve the simple identity of the house.
New domestic functions — bathroom, kitchen and storage — are concentrated within a freestanding element, allowing the continuity of the single interior space beneath the new light timber roof.
In the courtyard, planting highlights the dry-stone masonry and recalls the agricultural terraces historically associated with the site.
The project redefines the house as a minimal domestic refuge where material restraint and spatial continuity shape the atmosphere.
