TENERIFE NORTH AIRPORT EXTENSION – Competition · 2024

PLANOS Y DETALLES TÉCNICOS

The proposal conceives the extension as a natural evolution of the existing building, preserving the architectural principles that gave rise to the terminal and adapting them to the current requirements of the infrastructure.

Rather than an extension based on repetition or symmetry, the project proposes differentiated growth at both ends of the terminal, where each new element responds to the specific conditions of the program it accommodates. The complex is organized as a sequence of volumes linked to the large central dome, which continues to act as the spatial reference and organizing element of the intervention.

The architectural strategy relies on light, scale and form as tools capable of giving identity to each space. To the east, the new arrivals and baggage claim areas incorporate an elevated bridge that expands the waiting areas and establishes a continuous visual relationship with the activity of the terminal. The presence of natural daylight extends to one of the essential qualities of the original building, reinforcing the sense of openness and clarity throughout these spaces.

At the western end, the new check-in hall is conceived as a large, open and light-filled space. A sawtooth roof filters direct solar radiation and provides controlled daylight, while a large, glazed opening connects the hall to an exterior garden, bringing the presence of the landscape into the traveler’s experience and reinterpreting architectural resources already present in the existing terminal.

The extension is not conceived as a single homogeneous container, but as an architecture composed of clearly recognizable spaces, where light, views, circulation and scale contribute to creating a continuous experience for the user. Each area expresses its function and character, fostering a stronger relationship between the travelers, the building and the territory.

Through an architecture based on continuity, light, the enhancement of travelers’ views towards both the interior spaces and the landscape, and constructive precision, the project enables the evolution of the infrastructure while preserving the identity that has historically defined the airport, reinforcing the spatial quality of the complex and consolidating a contemporary airport experience closely linked to the singular character of Tenerife.
