Urban regeneration

Talborjt Quartier, Agadir

Turning the street into an urban meeting hall

The neighbourhood of Talborjt in Agadir is the selected nucleus to carry out the cooperative pilot project for Adecot. From the first visit the representative importance of the urban centre was stressed, being the well known neighbourhood of the reconstructed Agadir after the earthquake of 1960 that was going through a progressive deterioration and a slow but continuous disappearance of commercial activity that had grown from the plaza of the Crown Prince Sidi Mohammed in the administrative hub, as far as the area with the new shopping centre Aswak Assalam, through the Allal Ben Abdellah Street where the first intervention of reurbanising and commercial regeneration is carried out. The urbanization project is carried out on one level, eliminating steps between the pavement and the road thus creating a uniform space for the pedestrian with a tread line for restricted traffic, only allowing vehicles through first thing in the morning or the emergency services. The concept is to make the space into an urban meeting hall not just a street, by studying the sun exposure conditions so the trees are positioned according to the areas of shade and placing terraced areas beside restaurant premises creating accent lighting. All this is done using local materials giving the area an air of renewal, whilst treating the local identity with special sensitivity in order to maintain it.
